Fernweh

LISTENINGS: The ephemeral experience of incense through music and object. A Noguchi Museum collaboration exploring contemporary incense rituals.

CO — O1

Created with Hatis Noit, the Japanese vocalist known for transcendent, voice-only soundscapes blending folk and ceremonial chant. Fernweh (German: wanderlust for places never visited) translates longing into scent and sound. Noit's composition unfolds alongside the burning incense, both moving through the same durational arc. In Koh-do, you don't smell incense, you listen to it—a meditation requiring the same attention as music. Part of Co / Listenings, launched in collaboration with the Noguchi Museum.

incense: WOODY, FLORAL.
MATERIALS: a mix of night blooming jasmine and sandalwood.

Series Statement CO — Listenings

Incense as music, music as incense.

Inspired by Koh-dō — listening to scent with the same attention given to sound.

A musician composes the music.
Folie creates the incense.

An artist envisions an object — a permanent vessel that anchors the ephemeral.

All share the same duration. Burn and song unfold together.

Released on 12-inch vinyl with incense.

A contemporary ritual of active pause.
