Gaspar Noé is an Argentine-French filmmaker born 1963 in Buenos Aires. The son of Argentine painter Luis Felipe Noé, he emigrated to France in 1976 to escape the military dictatorship. After studying at École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière in Paris, he co-founded the production company Les Cinémas de la Zone with filmmaker Lucile Hadžihalilović in 1991. Noé emerged as the enfant terrible of New French Extremity with films including I Stand Alone (1998), Irréversible (2002), Enter the Void (2009), Love (2015), Climax (2018), and Vortex (2021). His work is characterized by sensory overload, graphic depictions of sex and violence, and formal experimentation—reverse chronology, first-person point of view, strobing imagery, and infrasound designed to induce physical unease. Working consistently with cinematographer Benoît Debie, Noé creates cinema that directly confronts the audience, most famously warning viewers in I Stand Alone that they have thirty seconds to leave before the final sequence.
