Julie Van Der Vaart is a Belgian-based photographic artist and educator born in Maastricht, The Netherlands, in 1988. She uses various experimental analog darkroom and printing techniques to create otherworldly interpretations of reality, with recent projects inspired by concepts of imaginary, non-linear time and existence. From an early age she was fascinated by space and time, imagining the infinity of the universe or the pulling darkness of black holes, obsessions that resulted in an alternative view on reality from which she continues to draw inspiration. Her work explores themes stemming from her experiences with depersonalization, questioning what it means to exist as a body and what reality is made of. She holds a Master in Fine Arts Photography and completed a residency at the Van Eyck Academy Maastricht, and is a recipient of the Stipendium for Established Artists from the Mondriaan Fund.
