POETRY WITHIN ORDINARY MATERIALS

SCULPTURE

Niamh O'Malley is an Irish artist born in 1975 in Co. Mayo who works with sculpture, film, photography, and installation to explore themes of landscape, memory, and cultural identity. Her practice often involves investigations into how personal and collective memory intersect with specific geographical and cultural contexts, emphasizing the relationship between individual experience and broader cultural narratives while maintaining a poetic and contemplative aesthetic approach. Working with materials including glass, metal, wood, stone, and steel, O'Malley creates sculptures that hint at functional objects, familiar architectural structures, and physical support systems. She represented Ireland at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022 with her installation "Gather," curated by Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. Her elegant sculptures explore the materiality of landscape and conceptual ideas about how we sense the world around us, often revealing the poetry within ordinary, domestic, and urban materials. Recent exhibitions include shows at Vardaxoglou Gallery London, The Douglas Hyde Gallery Dublin, and her work is held in collections including the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Arts Council of Ireland.
