MATERIAL INNOVATOR — OBJECT AND PROVOCATION

DESIGN

Sruli Recht is an Icelandic designer, artist, and material innovator whose practice blurs the boundaries between fashion, fine art, and industrial design through a contrarian approach to production and ritual. Born in Israel and working across Johannesburg, Melbourne, London, and Reykjavík, Recht has spent two decades challenging established assumptions about materiality, waste, and the relationship between object and narrative. His work ranges from avant-garde fashion to his "Non-Product" series, which interrogates the tension between production materials and waste, positioning discarded elements as objects of inquiry rather than byproducts. A champion of bleeding-edge production methods and the development of new materials, Recht's practice is distinguished by its seamless integration of story and product, where each piece functions as both object and provocation. His studio in Reykjavík serves as a laboratory for questioning long-entrenched practices in design, creating work that operates simultaneously as fashion, sculpture, and conceptual critique of contemporary production systems.
