ART IS THE IMPORTANT THING, NEXT TO LOVE, WITH EZRA MILLER

DIGITAL ART

Two weeks in Brooklyn, caught between creative blockage and breakthrough. Cold bright mornings biking to the studio. Gouache painting discovered as meditation. Days of grayness, both outside and inside the work. The Russian Baths as escape. Dancing at Nowadays as restoration. Wim Wenders' Perfect Days triggering nostalgia for Japan and recognition of his own photographic eye. The ritual of working out, the ritual of working. Packing for LA, feeling uprooted. A refrain throughout: Art is the important thing. Next to love.

Copied my keys and biked to the studio, cold bright sunlit morning, crisp air making some images inspired by the idea of pure light thinking about book design Helen Marten paintings inspiring me
listening to: sasha — bloodlock, D’angelo, stereolab my attention span was worse than I hoped, need to lock in and get some work done. I saw a beautiful plant “Angel type shit” a phrase I kept repeating as I looked through photos Frustrated a bit and hungry. Feel stuck and trapped.
21
Feeling kind of stressed like hitting a wall. Creative blockage. Making the same image over and over again. Garbage can overflowing. Listening to Scorn.
was so tired until I worked out, but feeling invigorated and motivated by getting stronger. Went to art gallery opening, and afterwards JG Melon for a burger — Felt extremely sociable, not anxious, comfortable, fluid. also feeling of holding some parts of myself, my desire, hostage.

I moved my monitor and small PC from my house to the office. Feeling of rearranging. Totally changed my desk’s layout. Also feeling like I’m making the work I have to do more urgent by bringing it to the office, so I can maximize.
“Coconut Water Good” — a thought I had while drinking coconut water Listening to: old mixes, Skee Mask b2b Zenker Brothers @ Unsound + Objekt Essential mix, nostalgic Went to manhattan and ate delicious vietnamese beef soup, fried chicken cartilage and crispy tofu. Ate a ton of sour candy and licorice while seeing Perfect Days by Wim Wenders. So heartwarming and beautiful, I loved it so much. I felt so much nostalgia for my time in Japan last October, it even seemed as if the movie was filmed around that time of year. Wenders’ imagery seemed to evoke some of my own photography, and it actually reminded me of the series I’ve been working on for the book recently, using shots from Japan.

Feeling quite weird today, like I have a million things to do but not enough time in the day. Super distracted. Extreme grayness today, both outside and in what I’m creating.
24
Taking the day to relax a bit. Not trying to do too much at all. Slept in. Wearing old cashmere sweater feels nice. Worked out again, feel like I’m in the best shape of my life right now unironically. Really don’t feel inspired today in any way. But I feel calm. sitting at my desk. just want to sleep.
25
I finally opened the gouache that my dad got me for Christmas and started messing around this afternoon. It was really meditative. Painting is quite difficult. I have almost no skill at all. It’s exciting to think about improving at it until I become skilled some day. I’d love that.
Ate the best szechuan food for dinner with nice friends in Flushing.
26
Today I felt like my heart was going to explode.
27
Clear headed. Strong sense of self. There is a beautiful mist covering the city. Feeling emotional, thinking about my Dad, and grateful. Couldn’t get much done at work but John and I started a collab which is exciting.
Took pleasure in biking during a rainstorm to get pizza. Great almost 3 hours painting with Gouache. I’m improving quickly.
28
The most wednesday ass wednesday of all time. Rainy grayness over the city.
29
Leap day. I really felt locked into my daily routine today, more than usual. Slightly worried what it will be like traveling so much for the next two months. Went to a nice opening at Blade Study — good art and energy. Took myself on a solo night to the Russian Baths. It’s my escape and way for me to relax and think deeply. Had a great meal at Superiority Burger. I love that place. I’m engrossed in the book Stoner by John Williams.

Start of new month. Slightly confused at work today. Not sure what direction to go. I tried some new things but they meant almost nothing. Still feeling slightly creatively blocked. Wearing a scent today; Comme des Garçons — Sequoia. I love how strong it smells.
Super bright lights at the art opening, low hung paintings. Had a fun night at Old Town Bar with the guys. Classic New York shit. Fluorescent lights came on too early at the Bushwick Basement Tek Lintowe show.
02
Lazy Day. Chill Day. Went to queens in the rain to microcenter, my favorite store. It’s like a safe haven for nerds. Bought a laptop for my live set. Feeling of making things real when you spend money. Smell of cellophane plastic and cardboard, new smell.
Brain had a hard time adjusting to the amount of new information it had to process today.
03
Woke up late again. Birds chirping. Feels like the first real day of spring. 60 degrees out. Biked to get coffee. Smell of weed on the street grossing me out, always does ever since I stopped smoking almost 6 years ago. Floral Ethiopian Coffee was delicious.
Went to Nowadays nonstop for the Sunday night party. Good energy. Dancing is restorative for me. Roza Terenzi crushed.
04
Woke up anxious. Went to bed depressed. Some days life is a grind. But you just push on through. I’m hopeful. But lonely. Stay busy. Keep moving. Art is the important thing. Next to love.

Last day before I go to LA. Trying to cram but making peace with where I’m at with work. Rainy day. Short day, full of things to do and think. I worked out and hurt my back a bit. Bad timing. Packing. Feeling uprooted. Trying to cram even though I have to be up early, finishing the Index pages for my book. Maybe working on too many things at once. But I feel glad to be productive, I’d rather be busy.

Series Statement

Over fixed periods, we invite artists to keep a diary with us — through audio, text, video, image.

They share textures, thoughts and experiences from that time.

At the diary’s close, our perfumer creates a fragrance — not as translation, but as portrait.

A period in the artist’s life,
filtered through another’s attention.

The scent becomes an anchor, but not for preservation.

For return. For continuation in another form.
