What If

THIRTY-ONE DAYS WITH ELIOT LEE HAZEL EXPLORING POSSIBILITIES THROUGH HAPPENSTANCE, INTUITION, AND THAT FEELING OF "SUCH IS LIFE..."

PHOTOGRAPHY

Eliot Lee Hazel is a Los Angeles-based photographer known for dreamlike portraiture and conceptual work with musicians including Thom Yorke, Bat for Lashes, and Cat Power. In January 2014, Hazel kept a visual diary working in series. A week of clouds—ethereal figures, soft focus, light leaks. Then shadows and architectural patterns. Masked figures titled Anyone's Ghost. Double exposures of bodies dissolving into landscapes. His reflection: "What if represents the possibilities, and surrendering one's self to intuition and happenstance... the 'true' me just wants to have fun and not take 'my work' too seriously." This diary fragrance lives in that surrender—soft, diffuse, playful, just serious enough to leave a trace.

"When I discovered Eliot Lee Hazel’s work, I got a sense of nostalgia expressed through his sepia photographs and their pastel shades. I felt an evanescent, ephemeral universe, like imprints of memories surrounded by hazy effects like halos… a feeling of the meaning of ‘absence’. I worked around a floral accord of sepia rose, rounded by balsamic spicy caramelized notes of benzoin and soft vanilla musk to reflect these soft silhouettes passing by..."

Series Statement

Over fixed periods, we invite artists to keep a diary with us — through audio, text, video, image.

They share textures, thoughts and experiences from that time.

At the diary’s close, our perfumer creates a fragrance — not as translation, but as portrait.

A period in the artist’s life,
filtered through another’s attention.

The scent becomes an anchor, but not for preservation.

For return. For continuation in another form.
